Annual Junior Police Fishing Derby
On the 3rd Thursday of June the Stayton, Turner, Aumsville, Salem Police Departments, Oregon State Police, Linn & Marion county Sheriff’s Offices host the Jr. Police Fishing Derby. The event started in 1983 as a way for law enforcement officers to connect with local youth. The derby consists of members of law enforcement, local volunteers and youth spending a day fishing together. The youths participating in the outing must be between the ages of 8 and 13, in the Marion and Linn County, Santiam Valley area.
The fishing derby is to create a closer relationship between the youths and law enforcement agencies and to provide a day of fishing for children who may not otherwise have such an opportunity.
Every child receives a shirt or hat in remembrance of the day. A hot-dog BBQ with all the trimmings is also provided. We are thankful for the generous donations from valley area businesses that make all this possible.
The Annual Junior Police Fishing Derby is a rewarding experience for all involved. If you are interested in participating or making a donation to this worthwhile event, please contact the Stayton Police Department Crime Prevention Unit, (503) 769-3423.
